Angel of Goliad Descendants Historical Preservation Minutes from March 28, 2009
Minutes taken by Cynthia Quintanilla

President Gilbert Alvarez called the meeting to order and the minutes from November 22, 2008 were read and approved.  The opening prayer was read by President Gilbert Alvarez.  It was unanimously agreed to use the Angel’s prayer from the website as our opening prayer at all the meetings.  All of the officers were introduced.  The webmaster Gil Alvarez, Jr. would like to include some very old information into our website and newsletters.  He continues to work on the website and update information.

President Gilbert Alvarez stated that we need to sell 400 more bricks at a price of sixty -two cents each.  We can sponsor one hundred bricks to donate to the Angel of Goliad.  President Gilbert Alvarez reviewed all costs of the bricks and stone to the members that were present.  Rudy Ramirez reminded the members that all membership dues are used for the bricks for the Angel.

The treasurer’s report was reviewed and read by the treasurer Dan Garza.  He also discussed an issue with the Texas Franchise tax.  There is no money involved; only paperwork because we are a non-profit organization.

There was no newsletter report at this time.

There was no membership committee report at this time.

Diana Alvarez gave a report on the entertainment committee regarding our reunion in 2010.  Gilbert will assign a committee to find a location for our reunion so they can advertise early with plenty of time.  Gilbert suggested we have the reunion in the month of July and include a celebration of his mother’s birthday and a meeting for the AOGDHP at the same time as the reunion and a silent auction.  The possible date will by July 16, 2010. It was unanimously agreed to have our reunion the weekend of July 16, 2010.  It is also suggested that a year before the reunion we begin to have social mixers in different cities such as San Antonio and Corpus Christi  for the descendants of the Angel so we can get to know each other.  The first social mixer will be announced at a later date.

Unfinished business includes possibly changing the name to the “Friends of the Angel.”  This would be to include open membership for anyone wishing to become a member who is not an actual descendent.  Rudy Ramirez suggested that we send a nice letter to the people who donated the sand to us.  It was unanimously agreed to do that.

Diana Alvarez will inquire as to the Henrietta Memorial Center for our reunion.  It was agreed that she will try to secure the Henrietta Memorial Center and a second choice will be NAS Kingsville.  Rudy Ramirez suggested that our organization foot the bill for the main dish and the members bring all the side dishes.  Robstown Catering was also suggested as to a possible caterer for our reunion.  More information will be gathered for the catering service.
One of our goals is to include landscaping around the statue of the Angel of Goliad.  This is an ongoing project.

The historical marker will be unveiled in March, 2010 and Dr. Lauro F. Cavazos will hopefully be our keynote speaker and also be honored as a lifetime honorary member along with the members of his family.

The veterans walk was also discussed and will only include deceased veterans who are descendants of the Angel.

Gilbert also discussed the update of our obituary section on our newsletter regarding deceased descendants of the Angel of Goliad.  The updated information is not incoming in a timely manner.

New business includes our ongoing goals to continue until 2012.  Many of those goals have already been met and we are continuing with other goals.  One goal is to attach a metal plaque to the bust of the Angel instead of the paper tag that the Goliad museum currently has.  We would also like information on the Angel and Dr. Lauro Cavazos displayed in the Conner Museum in Kingsville.

A logo of the Angel of Goliad was discussed.   It was tabled and will be discussed at our next meeting.  We would also like to have a picnic area created near the statue of the Angel of Goliad.  That will be discussed later with the county judge.  Also, we would like a re-enactment of our own regarding the Angel’s involvement of her heroic acts.  The secretary will write a formal letter to Bob Kinnan regarding a stand for the Angel of Goliad when the King Ranch has its ranch hand breakfast.  An historical marker for the Angel somewhere on the King Ranch was also discussed.  The last goal discussed was the inclusion of a float with the descendents of the Angel of Goliad in the La Posada parade of lights in Kingsville, Texas.  The next meeting will be held on July 18, 2009 in Kingsville at 1:00.  It will be at the Woman’s Club of Kingsville. There was a motion to close our meeting and it was seconded.  President Gilbert Alvarez adjourned the meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Cynthia Quintanilla
Secretary
